Baltimore, Md.-- The UMBC women's volleyball team fell, 3-1 on Friday at the RAC. Senior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) led all scorers with 17 kills. UMBC falls to 10-14, 4-7 AE on the year.
Binghamton jumped on the Retrievers early, rattling off a 5-1 lead to open things up. UMBC would answer, thanks in large part to kills by Schmidt to cut the deficit to 6-4. Both teams would battle in the middle stages of the stanza, before a 10-0 run at the end of the set gave the Bearcats a 25-12 win.
UMBC would have the answer in the second. Both sides battled with neither team giving an inch. UMBC would take the lead, and Binghamton would answer. Leading 20-19, the Retrievers would put together a mini 3-0 run fueled by kills from sophomore Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagyrana) to give them a 23-19 advantage. UMBC would close out the set, 25-21, and tie the match at 1-1.
The Bearcats came out swinging in the third and fourth sets. Binghamton took control early in the third and never looked back winning the set 25-16. The Retrievers would come out in the fourth and rally. However, every time UMBC got close, Binghamton had a counter. The Bearcats closed out the set 25-20, and the match 3-1.
Schmidt paced the attack with 17 kills for UMBC. She also added nine digs and one block in the contest. Trendafilova added a career high 15 kills in the match, posting eight digs as well.The Retrievers close out their season on Sunday, November 16. The Senior Day match with the Albany Great Danes begins at 1:00 p.m. at the RAC.
