Retrievers Fall, 3-1, to Hartford in #AEVB Action on Sunday

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC fell, 3-1, to Hartford on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. The Retrievers were led by junior Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) with 13 kills. UMBC falls to 10-13, 4-6 AE after the loss.

The opening stanza saw the Retrievers give up a service ace on the opening serve. From there UMBC settled in, going on a 5-1 run to opening up the set. Hartford would fight back, tying the match at 8-8 after a 10-3 run. UMBC would go on their own run, forcing a 22-22 tie late. The Retrievers would win the set after a solo block by senior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), 27-25.

Set number two saw the Hawks throw the first punch, taking an early 6-3 lead. Back and forth the two sides would battle midway through, with neither side gaining a distinct edge. Hartford then went on a 7-1 run to open up a 19-13 lead, forcing Coach Blanchard to call a timeout. From there, Hartford would hold on to win the set, 25-17, tying the match at 1-1.

Following the intermission, UMBC came out blazing, with a 6-3 lead early on. Hartford would answer back, forcing a 10-10 tie, after a 7-3 run. The Hawks would extend their advantage to 19-16, forcing the Retrievers to burn a timeout. Senior Kristin Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) kept the Retrievers in it late, laying down a pair of back to back service aces. However the Hawks would win the set following a block from Maya Louis and Sareeta Nethersole, 25-22.

Hartford would come out in the fourth on a 6-1 run to open things up. The Hawks would maintain the lead throughout the middle portion of the set, before the Retrievers would rally. UMBC cut the deficit to just one at 22-21, following kills from Cooper and Walker. However it was not enough; as Hartford went on to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Walker paced the Retriever attack with 13 kills, adding one block and one assist. Schmidt chipped in eight kills and eight digs for UMBC. Freshman Marissa Duncan (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) continued her strong weekend, laying down six winners and four blocks in the loss.

The Retrievers will have the week off, before hosting the final two America East matches of the regular season. UMBC will host Binghamton on Friday, November 14 and Albany on Sunday, November 16.
