UMBC Volleyball Falls, 3-0, to Eastern Michigan on Day One of Maddie Bingaman Tournament

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team fell, 3-0 (16-25, 22-25, 16-25), on Friday at the RAC. Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) led the Retrievers with nine kills, adding three total blocks. UMBC returns to action tomorrow, September 13 against Coppin State.

The opening set saw the Eagles (6-2) jump out ahead thanks in part to a 6-0 run to make the score 8-2. UMBC (4-4) would claw their way back, going on a 5-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to just two at 9-7. However, a run in the middle of the set by Eastern Michigan vaulted them out in front 19-12. UMBC could not catch the Eagles, as they took set one 25-16.

Set two saw the Eagles and Retrievers go back and forth, as neither team led by more than two early on. Eastern Michigan made a push midway through the set, jumping out front 18-11. The Retrievers made a push late. Kills by Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) and Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) helped cut the lead to only 19-18, forcing an Eagles timeout. UMBC fought back, but EMU held on, taking set two 25-22.

The final stanza was a mirror image of the first set. Eastern Michigan came out fast, racing out to a 10-2 lead. UMBC would cut into the deficit thanks to a couple of kills from Mlemchukwu, making it 18-10. However it was not enough, as Eastern Michigan closed out the set 25-16, and the match 3-0.

Mlemchukwu paced the Retrievers with nine kills and three blocks. Mirabella finished with seven kills and three service aces, while Schmidt had six winners.

UMBC returns to the court tomorrow, Saturday September 13. The Retrievers close out the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament against Coppin State at 3:00 p.m.
