UMBC Closes Out BYU Invitational on Saturday with Losses to #10 BYU and #5 Washington

Provo, Utah—The UMBC volleyball team fell in both of their matches on Saturday. The Retrievers lost to #10 BYU in the morning 3-0, before faltering to #5 Washington in the nightcap by the same result. UMBC falls to 4-3 on the year after the losses.

In the match against the Cougars, BYU got out to an early advantage in the first half, and never looked back. In the opening set, both teams traded points before the Cougars put together an 8-0 run to take control at 17-8. From there, BYU would close out the set 25-12, allowing just four Retriever points the rest of the way. Set two would have a similar outcome, but not before UMBC took the lead. A kill by Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) gave the Retrievers a 6-4 advantage. BYU took control midway through with a 7-0 run to make it 12-7. From there, the Cougars closed out the set 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead.

The final stanza saw UMBC fall into an 11-1 hole early, which they never recovered from. The Retrievers would fight back, but ultimately fall, 25-13 to lose the match 3-0. Hannah Schmidt paced the Retrievers with ten kills, adding three digs. Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) chipped in four kills.

In the nightcap, the Retrievers faced another nationally ranked opponent in #5 Washington. The Huskies came out swinging, but the Retrievers answered. UMBC cut the deficit to just three at 9-6, before Washington went on a 13-1 run to close out the first set, winning 25-10. The second frame saw similar consequences. UMBC fell behind early, as the Huskies raced out to an early 5-1 lead. A Mlemchukwu block and kill cut the lead to 6-3, before Washington put together a 7-1 run to take control of the set. Washington would go on to win set two with a score of 25-14.

Trailing 2-0, the Retrievers fought back in set three. Trading points back and forth, Abbie Mirabella (Hockenssin, Del./St. Mark's) gave UMBC the lead on a kill from Tanaeri Santiago (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy). However, a mini 4-0 run by the Huskies late, gave them the lead they needed to pull ahead 20-14. Washington went on to win a hard fought third set, 25-17, winning the match 3-0.

Schmidt led the way for the Retrievers against Washington with eight kills, adding a service ace. Mlemchukwu added seven kills, while Mirabella and Ivana Kostic (Belgrade, Serbia/Srednja Skola Grocka) each chipped in three.

UMBC returns to the court next weekend, September 12-13, in the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament. The Retrievers will face Eastern Michigan (September 12 at 7:00 p.m.) and Coppin State (September 13 at 3:00 p.m.) in the two day event. Each game will take place at the RAC on campus.
