UMBC Track and Field Returns to Action at the Penn State National and George Mason Invites This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC track and field returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the Penn State National and George Mason Invite. Part of the team will be traveling to State College for the two-day meet, while the rest will be in Fairfax for the George Mason Invite on Saturday. The Retrievers got strong performances last week at the NYC Gotham Cup, including a new school record by Alexios Prodanas in the weight throw.

Last Time Out (NYC Gotham Cup):

Alexios Prodanas had a throw of 18.98m, besting the school mark he set last week of 18.97m at the Great Dane Classic. Emmanouil Kamtsiklis finished in second in the event with a toss of 17.27m. Not to be outdone was Divinus Muteba, who took home gold in the high jump with his best jump coming at 2.04m.

On the track, Brian Nelson finished first in the 60m dash and second in the 200m dash with times 6.90 and 21.65 respectively. Isaiah Jensen finished sixth in the 400m dash in a time of 49.95 to help lead the sprinters.

Matt Kane and Chris Thoms each turned in seventh place finishes in the 3,000m and 5,000m with times of 8:52.64 and 15:43.90 with Peter Antonelli taking 12th in the 1,000m in 2:34.24.

On the women's side, Asha Washington had the best finish of any Retriever, taking fifth in the 60m dash in a time of 7.85. Erin Patrice also turned in a top ten finish in the event taking eighth in a time of 7.96. Tori Johnson finished in 10th place in the 400m dash in a time of 57.94 to round out the top sprint finishes.

Emma Kartalia led the distance runners with a seventh place finish in the 5,000m with a time of 19:39.18 with Emmy Beyer finishing ninth in the 3,000m in 10:57.11.

In the field, Breanna Flores took 12th in the weight throw to lead the throwers.

Prodanas Named #AETF Male Field Performer of the Week:

Prodanas was named America East Male Field Performer of the Week on Tuesday after another strong performance. Prodanas earned the honor after a record setting week for the Retrievers at the NYC Gotham Cup.

Prodanas broke the school record, that he set a week earlier, in the weight throw at the NYC Gotham Cup in Staten Island on Friday. His toss of 18.98m just beat out his toss of 18.97m he has just six days earlier at the Great Dane Classic.
