Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC track and field returns to action on Friday at the NYC Gotham Cup, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. The Retrievers are coming off an impressive showing at the Great Dane Classic last weekend, which saw Alexios Prodanas set a new school record in the weight throw.

Last Time Out (Great Dane Classic):
The Retrievers had a strong showing at the Great Dane Classic, led by Alexios Prodanas who set the school record in the weight throw. He broke the seven year record set back in 2012 by Cameron McDearmon.
Prodanas finished with his best toss at 18.97m. That throw beat the previous school record which was held by McDearmon at 18.93m set back in the winter of 2012. Trenson Terry and Divinus Muteba also turned in top five finishes in the field with Terry going third in the long jump (6.92m) and Muteba taking fourth in the high jump (1.99m/6'6.25").
A slew of Retrievers finished in near the top on the track. Matt Kingeter and Hugh O'Connor finished three-four in the 5,000m run with times of 15:19.63 and 15:30.00 respectively. Brian Cave was not too far behind in eighth in 15:35.19. Nathan Nadal finished sixth in the mile with a time of 4:23.06.
Brian Nelson led the sprinters with two seventh place finishes in the 200m dash (21.87) and the 400m dash (50.12).
Kaya Knake had the best finish on the women's side with a sixth place finish in the 1,000m run, crossing the tape in 2:59.59.
In the field, Kelechi Nwanaga finished fourth in the shot put with her best throw coming at 13.00m.
Last Year at the NYC Gotham Cup:
Courtney Mattson and Eric Smart both took third place in the men's and women's 5000m with times of 18:49.22 and 15:36.55 respectively to lead their teams. Along with Mattson, Collesse Daley took eighth in the 400m dash with a time of 58.64. Erin Patrice crossed the line ninth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.92, while Ariella Garcia ran a time of 2:21.02 in the 800m run to finish in tenth place.
In the field, Ricca Graham placed tenth in the weight toss with a distance of 13.27m.
After Smart, the men recorded three other top ten finishes. Brian Cave finished in eighth place in the 3000m run, crossing the line in 8:57.86. The men had a pair of ninth place finishes as well, with Jamal Cody and Nathan Nadal. Cody ran the 400m dash in 49.64, while Nadal ran the mile run in 4:22.57.
-The Retrievers will continue their march toward the America East Championships with the team splitting up to go to the Penn State National meet and George Mason Invite next Friday and Saturday.
