Baltimore, Md. – Kaya Knake broke the America East and UMBC 800m record on her way to a first-place finish at Sunday's America East Outdoor Championships at UMBC Stadium. Knake's time was 2:07.23. Brian Nelson earned the America East title in the 100m dash with a time of 10.62 and in the 200m dash with a time of 21.42.
Nelson also helped the 4x100m men's relay team of Donald Duncan, James Oakley III, and John Oputa take first in the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.10. This was UMBC's fourth consecutive America East win in the relay.
Brian Nelson was awarded the Coaches Award for compiling the most points at the Championship. Kelechi Nwanaga was awarded the Most Outstanding Rookie for her record breaking performance in the javelin throw on Saturday.
Also in the 200m dash, Oakley took second with a time of 21.51 while Oputa took eighth with a time of 22.30.
Also for the men, Miles Smith crossed the line in second in the 800m finals with a time of 1:51.61. This time was good for fifth in UMBC history. Jamal Cody also took second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.54, which is the fastest time in UMBC history. Cody also took third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.43.
The 4x400m relay team of Nelson, Oakley, Oputa, and Cody crossed the line in second with a time of 3:16.37, while the 4x800m relay team of Taylor Baranoski, Erik Jenks, Rhys Burgett, and Smith took third in the event. The Retrievers finished with a time of 7:37.04.
Andrew Daniels took fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.90. Oakley and Oputa also finished fourth and fifth in the 400m final with times of 48.57 and 48.83 respectively.
In the 1,500m final, Taylor Baranoski took eighth with a time of 3:53.30, while Nathan Nadal took tenth in the 5,000m with a time of 14:58.08.
In the field for the men, Russell Bowman took second in the shot put with a throw of 16.21m. Bryce Bruce and Bowman tied for 11th in the discus, with each throwing 42.00m.
For the women, Knake helped lead the 4x800m relay team of herself, Briana Roberts, Bridgett Redding, and Ariella Garcia to a first-place finish with a time of 9:02.75, while the 4x400m relay team of Funmi Daramola, Tori Johnson, Collese Daley, and Erin Patrice also took first with a time of 3:48.76.
the 4x100m women's team of Erin Patrice, Amani Wallace, Daley, and Kara Patrice earned a second-place finish with a time of 46.14. Tori Johnson took second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.42. Johnson's time puts her in third all-time at UMBC for this event.
Wallace also finished in fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.60, and finished in eighth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.06. In the 5,000m event, Kelsey Ponton took fourth with a time of 17:42.17.
In the 100m dash, Erin and Kara Patrice finished sixth and seventh. Erin ran the event in 12.17 while Kara finished in 12.28. Along with Knake, Roberts finished seventh in the 800m with a time of 2:16.70 in the 800m.
In the field, Kelechi Nwanaga placed ninth in the shotput with a distance of 12.36m.
