Track and Field Returns to Staten Island for Fastrack National Invitational

Baltimore, Md. -- UMBC track and field travel to Staten Island for the third time this season to participate in the Fastrack National Invitational on Friday.

Last Time Out (Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup):

Last week, the Retrievers spent a fruitful weekend at Penn State, bringing home many top ten finishes.

On Friday, four Retrievers brought home top nine finishes in the 5,000m race.  Junior Matt Kingeter led the team with a fourth place finish, crossing the line with a time of 15:35.34, followed by freshman Brian Cave in fifth with a time of 15:41.24.  Freshman Matt Bennett came in seventh with a time of 15:51.06 and junior Eric Smart brought home ninth place with a time of 16:13.26.

In the field, sophomore Michael Parkent took seventh for the Retrievers in the weight throw with a distance of 15.96m.

For the women, senior Courtney Mattson came in seventh in the 5,000m event with a time of 18:47.51.  In the field, Senior Ricca Graham took tenth place in the weight throw with a distance of 12.87m.

Both the men and women finished strong on Saturday.  Senior John Oputa led the way, coming in third in the 400m dash with a time of 49.94 as well as coming in fourth in the 200 dash with a time of 22.12.  Fellow senior James Oakley III followed right behind Oputa in the 400m dash for a fourth place finish with a time of 49.95.  

Senior Ifa Eado also received a bronze, with a third place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:10.55, while classmate Noel Njem finished in seventh in the 200m dash with a time of 23.20.  Junior Nathan Nadal came home with a fourth place finish in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:54.43, and sophomore Miles Smith brought home a fifth place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:54.21.

Out in the field, Senior Russell Bowman threw the shot put 15.26m for an eighth place finish.

Juniors Amani Wallace and Yinka Alabi paced the Retrievers on Saturday.  Wallace placed seventh in the 400m dash and Alabi finished eighth in the 200m dash respectively, with times of 57.85 and 25.49 respectively.

Senior Zoya Trendafilova came in eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.55m.

The Retrievers return to Penn State for the third time in four weeks, this time for the Penn State Tune Up on Feb. 17.
