Track and Field Completes First Day of Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup

State College, Pa. – The UMBC track and field team finished the first of two days of competition in the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup at Penn State on Friday evening.

The Retrievers were led for the men in the 5,000m event.  The men secured four top nine finishes by juniors, Matt Kingeter and Eric Smart, and two freshman, Brian Cave and Matt Bennett.  The juniors placed fourth (15:35.34) and ninth (16:13.26) respectively, while Cave placed fifth (15:41.24) and Bennett placed seventh (15:51.06).

In the field, sophomore Michael Parkent took seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 15.96m. 

For the women, Senior Courtney Mattson placed seventh in the 5,000m, ending with a time of 18:47.51.

Senior Ricca Graham finished in tenth place, throwing a distance of 12.87m in the weight throw.

The Retrievers continue competition in State College tomorrow for day two of the Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup.
