Retriever Track and Field Completes Second Day of Penn Relays


Philadelphia, Pa.—UMBC track and field once again had a strong showing at the Penn Relays on Friday. The 4x100m relay team finished second in the ECAC finals, just .02 seconds off first place.

Mercedes Tillman, Amani Wallace, Kara Patrice and Erin Patrice finished in a time of 46.47, just .02 seconds behind the winners from St. John's. Tillman, Wallace and Erin Patrice teamed up with Yinka Alabi to place 22nd in 4x200m relay with a time of 1:41.00.

The only other women's competitor was Abigale Slonski, who place 29th in the javelin competition with a throw of 34.43m (112'11").

The men saw four relay team compete, led by the distance medley quartet of Urgy Eado, Ty Thronson, Nick Johnson, and Hassan Omar. The foursome finished the race in eighth place with a time of 10:04.47.

The 4x200m relay team of James Oakley, John Oputa, Afees Abolurin, and Darrius Oxley earned a spot in the IC4A finals with a 14th place finish in a time of 1:28.46. Also joining them in the IC4A finals are the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Oakley, Oputa, Abolurin and Daryian Miles finished the 4x100m relay in 31st place with a time of 41.90, while Oxley, Niko Coaxum, Jamal Cody and Erick Soetje took 29th in the 4x400m relay (3:16.36).

The final day of competition begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday from Franklin Field.
