Baltimore, Md.—Four UMBC track and field athletes earned spots in the 2015 NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla. as announced by the NCAA office. Seniors Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) on the women's side, and juniors Vincent Rentzsch (Oranienburg, Germany/Elite Sportschule Potsdam) and Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) on the men's side earned spots. The preliminaries will be held on May 28-30 at University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Jackson was a force in the sprints for UMBC this year. She won the 100m dash at the America East Outdoor Championships. She owns the school record in both events, and shattered the conference record at the championships as well.
Fogle earned various records in her own right, as she will represent UMBC in an event she has excelled in all year, the 400m hurdles. Fogle set the school mark in the event with a time of 59.13 earlier in the year. She was also a part of the school record setting 4x400m relay team with a time of 3:39.07.
Hassan Omar has been stellar in the distance events, earning Most Outstanding Track Performer at the America East Championships after winning the 5,000m and 10,000m runs. Omar won the 5,000m in a time of 14:40.90, and the 10,000m in 31:36.82.
Rentzsch has proved himself in the javelin all season long, setting the school mark with a throw of 71.21m earlier this summer. He won the event at the conference championships with a toss of 70.14m. He placed second at the ECAC meet, with his best throw coming at 66.95m. Rentzsch is currently 20th in the nation in the event.
The three day meet will be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 28-30. If a Retriever qualifies, NCAA finals will be held in Eugene, Oregon on June 10-13.
