Philadelphia, Pa.—The UMBC track and field team took to the City of Brotherly Love for the 121st Penn Relays. Day One saw the distance medley relay team lower their school record on a cold day.

Angelina Oputa, Essence Fredericks, Mary Katherine Kulp, and Sarah Daly finished the event with a time of 12:00.14. The quartet previously set the record earlier this spring with a time of 12:01.68.

Paulette Fogle kicked off the relays with a fifteenth place finish in the 400m hurdles, crossing the tape in a time of 1:01.98.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Mercedes Tillman, Fogle, Briana Young and Kalane Abbey placed 23rd in the prelims on Thursday with a time of 3:52.16. That time was good enough to qualify them for the ECAC finals on Saturday.

Hassan Omar lowered his personal best in the 5,000m run, finishing in sixteenth place with a time of 14:18.66.

In the field, Alisha Beeman took twelfth place in the high jump, recording her best jump of 1.68m (5'6"). Reigning America East Field Athlete of the Week Ozi Edokobi and her sister, Nneoma Edokobi went sixteenth and seventeenth in the shot put competition. Ozi had her best toss of 13.18m, while Nneoma was just behind her at 13.17m.

The Penn Relays will continue on Friday at 9:00 a.m., and will finish up on Saturday from the University of Pennsylvania.
