Lewisburg, Pa.-- The UMBC track and field team opened the season at the Bison Opener on Saturday. Several Retrievers took home first place finishes, with many of them earning school and facilities records.
Erick Soetje started things off with a second place finish in the 300 meter dash in a time of 35.41. Darius Oxley followed that up with a seconds place finish in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:07.24. Ty Thronson earned a second place finish for UMBC in the 800 meter, crossing the tape in 1:58.34.
Hassan Omar earned a first place finish for the Retrievers in the mile run. Omar won with a time of 4:17.95, good for ninth all-time in the school record books. Rhys Burgett followed suit, winning the 3000 meter with a time of 8:55.51.
In the field events, Yao Adantor led the charge with a win in the shot put. Yao finished with his best throw of 16.88, setting a school record.
On the women's side, Mercedes Jackson paced the Retrievers, winning the 60 meter dash with a facility record of 7.46. Paulette Fogle set a personal best in the in the 300 dash, finishing in 40.35, good for second place.
Madeline Entwistle earned a third place finish in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 9.02.
In the field, Alisha Beeman took home second in the triple jump, with a distance of 11.30m. Nneoma Edkobi finished in fifth in the weighted throw, but had the fourth best throw in school history with a throw of 51-9.75.
The Retrievers will be back in action on January 10 at the Penn State Relays. The event will commence from Happy Valley at 10:00 a.m.
