Retriever Track and Field Opens Weekend at 120th Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – The UMBC track and field team opened its weekend of competition at the 120th Penn Relays with athletes competing in the high jump, shot put, 4x100 and 4x400m relays, Thursday at Franklin Field.

In the women's high jump, junior Alisha Beeman (Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnell/Hartford) matched her season-best and finished tied for tenth after clearing 1.68m (5'6").

Sophomore Nneoma Edokobi (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) placed 16th in the collegiate division of the shot put competition with a toss of 12.24m (40'2").

The women's 4x100m relay team of freshman Mercedes Tillman (Waldorf, Md./North Point), junior Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), sophomore Marie Yuille (Bowie, Md./Oakland Mills), and junior Briana Young (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) constructed an ECAC-worthy time of 46.66 to place 29th out of 100 teams.

In the women's 4x400 relay, the Retriever squad of Yuille, senior Deborah Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg), Jackson,  and junior Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) combined to finish 25th out of 87 teams with a time of 3:47.68.

UMBC will continue competition at the 2014 Penn Relays on Friday beginning with senior Yao Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan State/Maryland) and junior Thor Serafenas (Olney, Md./Good Counsel/Clemson) taking part in the men's college shot put.
