CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – UMBC track and field junior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) has been named the America East Female Field Performer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. This is Deller's first weekly award of the 2011-12 indoor season.
Competing in the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games, Deller won the gold in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 14.96m (49'1.75"). The junior's throw ranks second in UMBC's history and the longest in the America East this season. Deller also placed fourth in the weight throw at the Winter Games with a throw of 15.46m.
Deller's award marks the second straight week that the UMBC squads have claimed a weekly award, following junior Cameron McDearmon's honor a week ago.
With the award, Deller becomes the fifth different Retriever to win an America East weekly award this season. Junior Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) and freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) have also won an award for the women, while McDearmon and junior Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) have claimed the honor for the men.
The UMBC track and field teams now head to Boston to compete in the 2012 America East Track and Field Championships held at Boston University. The two-day meet will begin on Fri. Jan. 17 and run through Sat. Feb. 18.
