CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC track and field freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was named the America East Track Performer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Jackson, who was named the Most Outstanding Rookie at the conference indoor meet in February, broke two school records at the team's initial outdoor meet of the season this past weekend in South Carolina.
Competing at the Weems Baskin Invitational on the campus of the University of South Carolina, Jackson placed second in both the 100m (11.81) and 200m dash (24.05) events, breaking the UMBC record in both.
Her time in the 100m event breaks Beverly Ruffin's record of 11.90 set back in 1997 while the 200m time put her ahead of Britney Foreman who ran a 24.41, two years ago in 2010. Jackson now owns two indoor school records (60m and 200m dash) and two outdoor records.
This is the second weekly conference award for the freshman who was named the Track Performer of the Week back on Jan. 10.
Jackson and the Retrievers return to the track this weekend when they compete at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.
