BALTIMORE - The UMBC women's tennis team opened play at the UMBC Fall Invitational by taking four of six matches against Delaware at the UMBC Tennis Complex.
The Retrievers won three of five singles events and the lone doubles match in the 5+1 format.
UMBC freshman Maria Siopacha (Limassol, Cyprus) impressed in her home debut, only losing three games to another freshman, Delaware's Sara Komer. Siopacha triumphed, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 flight to set the tone for the match.
Junior Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) won her seventh consecutive match of the fall, triumphing, 6-3, 7-5, over Arielle Shuren at the No. 1 flight. Dolashvili fell behind, 5-1, in the second set, but won the final six games to capture the match.
The doubles tandem of junior Hanna Victorsson (Hagersten, Sweden) and Charlotte Tonjann (Bussum, The Netherlands) won the most dramatic match of the afternoon, edging Amanda Studnicki/Denny LaMachia, 6-4, 3-6 (11-9).
Sophomore Alice Taylor was UMBC's final winner of the match, defeating Annie Jaskulski, 6-3, 6-4 .
The Retrievers face Villanova at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning and complete their portion of the competition versus Richmond at 2:00 p.m.
