Akron, Ohio – The UMBC women's tennis team played brilliantly in doubles, defeating Youngstown State in all three matches at the Akron Shootout.
Incredibly, all six singles matches versus the host Zips went to three sets, where the hosts prevailed in five of six super tie-breakers.
Junior Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) continued her outstanding start, knocking off Akron's No. 1 singles player, Karalina Maksimava, 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).
Freshman Maria Siopacha (Limassol, Cyprus), senior Madlena Kurasz (Zlotoryja, Poland) and sophomore Laura Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) all rallied from a set down to even their matches, but could not complete the comeback.
In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Dolashvili/Siopacha and the No. 3 duo of Ambrozic/Alice Taylor (Great Gransden, England) both blanked their Penguin foes.
UMBC completes play on Sunday by taking on Youngstown State in singles and Cleveland State in doubles.
