Cambridge, Mass. – The UMBC women's tennis team will be the No. 4 seed for the America East Conference Tennis Championships, which begin on Friday, April 25 at the Wilde Lake Community Center in Columbia, Md.

The Retrievers (7-12) serve as the host institution and will take on the No. 5-seeded Albany Great Danes (10-12) in the first quarterfinal match on Friday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m. Should the Retrievers advance, they would take on top-seeded Stony Brook (13-3) in the semifinals on Saturday, April 26 at 9:00 a.m.

The title match will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27 at the Retriever Tennis Complex on the UMBC campus.

SEASON IN REVIEW: UMBC opened the season with a win over Prairie View A&M and also posted solid victories over James Madison (5-2) and Seattle (5-2) during the season. The Retrievers (7-12) dropped five of six April matches, but three were 4-3 decisions.

THE PLAYERS: Senior Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) won both singles matches against Richmond and Maryland last week and has captured five straight contests at No. 1 singles to record a 6-3 mark at the top position this spring. She earned America East Player of the Week honors on April 15. Berghaus missed most of the 2013 spring campaign with a shoulder injury and did not compete in the fall of 2013.

UMBC senior Josefin Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) and freshman Mariami Dolashvili (Alushta, Ukraine) are tied for the team lead with 11 singles victories each. Stange-Jonsson leads all active Retrievers with 52 career singles victories.

AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP: Last season, No. 3 UMBC fell in the semifinals of the championship, 4-1, to No. 2 Albany. The Retrievers reached the championship match as the No. 2 seed in 2012, but fell, 4-2, to No. 4 Stony Brook in a tight match played at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The match was decided at No. 2 singles, where Berghaus, a sophomore, took her opponent to a pair of tie-breakers, but lost by the narrowest of margins, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
