Cambridge, Mass.- UMBC freshman tennis standout Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizgymnasium) earned the 2011 America East Conference's Rookie of the Year award.
Berghaus won 10 singles matches for the Retrievers, including seven from the top spot. The first-year player reached the 20-win mark this spring, posting marks of 11-4 in doubles and 11-6 in singles. She competed primarily at the No. 1 singles position for head coach Rob Hubbard's squad.
Berghaus is the first Retriever tennis player to earn the league's honor.
