Fairfax, Va. – Three Retriever men produced top-five finishes in day two of the Patriot Invitational held at the Jim McKay Natatorium.
UMBC junior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) backed up a fifth place finish in yesterday's 500-yard freestyle by placing fourth in the 400-yard individual medley. He posted a team season-high best time of 4:00.45.
Senior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) matched Wisner's fourth-place effort in the 200 freestyle. Yesterday's 50-yard freestyle medalist swam the event in a season-best time of 1:39.41.
A pair of Retrievers placed in the top seven in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Garrett Wlochowski (Manchester, Conn.) edged sophomore teammate Luka Zuric (Setauket, N.Y.), placing fifth in 50.10, while Zuric finished seventh in 50.91.
On the women's side, junior Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) recorded the Retrievers' best finish of the evening. She placed seventh in the 100 butterfly, matching her season-best time of 56.56, which she posted at Towson on November 2. Senior Sotiria Neofytou (Limassol, Cyprus) finished second in the "B" final (10th overall), actually outperforming Marin with a time of 56.53 in the evening.
Senior Hayley Committe (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) placed tenth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:05.10.
UMBC's top divers each finished tenth in the final diving events of the meet. Senior Abby Biddulph (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) registered a score of 213.10 on the 1-meter board, while classmate Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) chalked up 221.55 points in the 3-meter board.
Both teams maintained their positions in the team scoring. The men remain in fifth place with 286.5 points, while the women are in eighth position (108).
The meet concludes on Saturday evening.
