Swimming and Diving Closes Out 2018 Against VMI

BALTIMORE - The UMBC swimming and diving team will compete in its final meet of 2018 as the Retrievers take to the pool on Saturday, December 1 to face the VMI Keydets. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. in the UMBC Aquatic Complex.

The last time UMBC saw action in the pool was during the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason. The men came in sixth place, while the women finished in seventh.

Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) and Alexander Gliese (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) each finished with three top-three finished at the Invite. Rattsev took home gold in the gold in the 50 free, touching in with a time of 20.38, while finishing second in both the 100 free (45.14) and 200 free (1:40.89).

Gliese finished second in both the 200 IM (1:52.09) and 200 (1:46.69), while also picking up a bronze medal in the 100 back (49.31).  

On the women's side, Hania Moro (New Cairo, Egypt) earned two bronze medals in the 500 free (4:56.83) and 1650 free (16:55.88) at the Invite, while also picking up a fourth-place finish in the 200 free (1:52.53).

Moro and Rattsev were both named America East Performers of the Week for their performances at the Patriot Invitational.


VMI has been away from the water since October 27, where the men fell to Davidson, 153-123, and the women fell to UNC Ashville, 216-63.

On the men's side, Stephen Hopta and Ryan Cooper each took home two top-three finishes for the Keydets. Hopta took first in the 500 free (4:51.44) and third in the 100 back (54.62), while also finishing fourth in the 200 back (2:00.46). Cooper finished first in the 400 IM (4:27.78) and second in the 200 breast (2:16.96), while also placing fourth in the 100 breast (1:02.65).

On the women's side, Sophie Svoboda earned two top-three finishes, placing second in the 50 free (25.27) and third in the 100 free (55.40). She also earned a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast (1:08.95).
