UMBC Divers Take to the Empire State for NCAA Zone Diving Competition


Baltimore, Md.—Three Retrievers will take to the boards in hopes of qualifying for NCAA Championships. This year's zone meet will be held at the University of Buffalo on March 9-11.

Last Year at Zones:

Darelius became the first-ever UMBC female diver to advance to the finals at the regional meet, qualifying for the final round in 17th-place with a score of 248.30 on the 3-meter board.  In the event finals, the sophomore scored 220.00 to finish 18th overall.

Darelius has competed at the Zone meet in each of her first two years at UMBC.  After earning a trip last year as a freshman, she took the conference by storm this season.  She qualified for the Zone meet on Jan. 4 by scoring a career-best 271.95 during a 1-meter competition in Coral Springs, Fla.  She set a new career-best on the 3-meter board just a week later, scoring 272.47 as the Retrievers entertained Howard at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.  Her performances were rewarded as she was named the America East Diver of the Week three times.

For the men, Green, a junior, earned a spot in the finals for the 1-meter competition by placing 17th in the opening round with a score of 278.20.  During the event finals, Green placed 18th overall with a score of 262.85.

Green was also making a return trip to the Zones meet after competing in 2013 as a sophomore.  This season, Green qualified for the regional meet by scoring a career-high 304.65 during the team's trip to Florida over winter break.  He broke this mark at the CCSA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. when he scored 319.85 in the event prelims, and went on to win a silver medal in the event.  The junior took the top spot in the 3-meter competition at the CCSA meet, however, scoring a career-high 318.85 in the event finals for the win.

Junior Pak Lam Wong (Hong Kong/Kowloon Technical School) and senior Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) also competed for the UMBC men on Tuesday.  Wong placed 35th overall with a prelims score of 233.90 while Perkins scored 213.85 to finish in 44th. 

Last Time Out (CCSA/America East):

Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) swept the diving disciplines, winning the 1 meter dive on Friday. Green scored 317.15, while fellow senior Pak Lam Wong(Hong Kong/Kowloon Technical School) took second with a score of 300.15.

The other victory for the Retrievers came on the diving boards, as senior Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) won the 3 meter dive, successfully retaining his crown with a score of 342.65. Fellow classmate Pak Lam Wong (Hong Kong/Kowloon Technical School) placed third with a score of 269.55.

Coco Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) took third in the 3 meter dive, scoring 251.40, while also placing third on the 1 meter board.
