CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – UMBC divers Ryan Green (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye) each qualified for the NCAA Zones meet for the second straight season during a diving competition with George Mason, Penn State, and West Virginia in Coral Springs, Fla. on Jan. 4. Darelius and Green join senior Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), who met the standard back in October, as entries for the Retrievers at the regional meet.
In addition, Green was named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Diver of the Week for the second time this season.
Competing on the one-meter board, Darelius scored a career-high 271.85 while finishing fourth in the competition. Her score breaks her previous best of 265.89, which she set during last season's training trip in South Florida against West Virginia. The sophomore has won three dual meet events this season and was named the America East Diver of the Week on Nov. 26 after placing second on the three-meter and fifth on the one-meter board at the Patriot Invitational.
Green punched his trip to the NCAA Zones after winning the one-meter event against the local rivals. The junior scored a season-best 304.65 to qualify for the second straight year and give UMBC two male representatives for the second season in a row. Green also earned CCSA Diver of the Week honors on Nov. 27 after winning the three-meter event at the three-day invitational at George Mason and also claiming sixth in the one-meter competition.
UMBC kicks off the 2014 portion of its schedule on Saturday by hosting Howard for Senior/Alumni Day at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The Retrievers and Bison are scheduled to hit the water at 1:00 p.m. following a Senior Ceremony.
