CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC swimming and diving senior Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) was named America East Female Swimmer of the Week and junior Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) was named Male Diver of the Week for the third week of the season, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
In the Retrievers' first home meet against Navy, McKenney picked up a total of four victories, two individual and two relays, during UMBC's 150-144 loss. The senior set personal season-best times in the 50-yard (24.36) and 100-yard (52.39) freestyles, taking home a win in each event. McKenney also anchored both the 200 medley (1:47.11) and 400 free (3:32.20) relays to wins and new season-lows.
This is the third time that McKenney, the 2010 America East Most Outstanding Female Swimmer, has been named conference Swimmer of the Week. Her last honor came last season on February 1st after recording four wins against William & Mary and Delaware.
In UMBC's meet against Navy, Eckhoff picked up his second win of the young season, taking home top honors in the 1 mtr competition. In the process of winning, the junior posted a season-high score of 295.73 in the event.
This is the second time this year that Eckhoff has been named America East Diver of the Week after he gained this honor in the first week of the season following the Retrievers' exhibition meet with Bucknell.
At least one Retriever has now been selected as a conference performer of the week, in each of the three weeks so far this season. Eckhoff and Johan Rohtla (Tallin, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) garnered awards the opening week, while Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) was named Swimmer of the Week just a week ago.
UMBC returns to actions this Saturday when they host George Washington as a part of Parents Weekend. The meet at the UMBC Natatorium begins at 1:00 p.m.
