BALTIMORE—UMBC swimming and diving seniors Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre), Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Eric Jones(Gambrills, Md./Arundel), Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside), Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) and junior John Mendenhall (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) have been named captains for the 2010-11 season, head coach Chad Cradock announced today.
“We are looking for leadership from our upperclassmen to propel us to another great season,” Cradock said. “We have a big senior class and they are looking to finish their collegiate careers on a high note.”
Godwin, Ryan and Shinholser will lead the women’s team, while Freeman, Jones and Mendenhall will captain the men’s side as the Retrievers open their 2010-11 season with a non-scoring meet against Bucknell on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. UMBC will also host Rider (Oct. 16) and America East rival Boston U. (Oct. 30) before their final home meet of the season on Jan. 22 against Marist. The Retrievers will be the host school for the 2011 America East Swimming and Diving Championships, to be held at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center Feb. 17-20.
“We’re looking forward to hosting the championships this year and being close to home and to our fans,” the coach said. “I want to thank the UMBC administration for helping us choose such a great competition site that will produce an excellent atmosphere and hopefully some fast times.”
Like last year, the Retrievers will also compete at Maryland in a last-chance meet late in the season, but a date has not yet been confirmed.
UMBCRetrievers.tv will be broadcasting some of the home meets this season, starting with the Oct. 16 Rider meet. For more information, visit http://www.umbcretrievers.tv.
