Women’s Soccer Closes Road Swing Against Longwood on Sunday Afternoon

The UMBC women's soccer team will close out a four-game road trip as they take on the Longwood Lancers on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m.

 

DAWG BITES

The Retrievers fell to 1-3-2 on the season after dropping a 2-0 decision to Lehigh on Friday evening. 

 

The Mountain Hawks scored in the 16th minute but the UMBC backline held strong as they blocked back-to-back shots in the 25th minute and Jade Wilkins made a save in the 27th.

 

Christina Corbi had a shot blocked in the 22nd minute before Nikki Saad sent one into the hands of the Lehigh keeper in the 24th minute.

 

Elysia Paolillo and Corbi each put a shot on goal in the early part of the second half, but Lehigh's keeper was able to save both shots.

 

In the 76th minute, Wilkins made another save in the left corner of the post after Lehigh sent a header towards the net.

 

The Mountain Hawks added a second goal in the 82nd minute after a free kick was sent into the box and knocked into the left corner of the net.

 

Wilkins made two more saves in the final ten minutes to keep the final at 2-0 in favor of the host Lehigh.

 

Wilkins made a season-high six saves on the night while Erin Stevenson took a team-high three shots. 

 

On the season, Danielle Fuentes leads the team with six points (2g, 2a). In goal, Wilkins has 12 saves on the year with a 2.00 goals against average and a .706 saves percentage. Alyssa Minnick, who has started in two games, has 17 saves with a .850 saves percentage and a 0.78 goals against average.

 

GET TO KNOW: Longwood Lancers

The Lancers enter the contest at 1-4-0, most recently falling to American, 1-0, on Friday night. 

 

Longwood's long win on the season came on September 2 when they defeated Howard, 2-0. Emilie Kupsov and Kennedy Culbreath each netted a goal for the Lancers in the win.

 

The Lancers also took Old Dominion into overtime on September 5, but the Monarchs scored in the 107th minute for the 2-1 win.

 

On the season, Culbreath leads the team with four points (2g), followed by Kupsov and Sydni Greaves (1g), and Danielle Toone (2a).

 

Madison Van Dyke has started three games for the Lancers, making 28 saves with a .848 saves percentage and 1.35 goals against average. Mary Kate Levush has started two games in goal, making nine saves with a .643 saves percentage.



INSIDE THE SERIES

The Retrievers and Lancers are meeting for the seventh time overall and the first time since 2017 with Longwood leading the series, 3-2-1.

 

In their last meeting, the Retrievers shutout the Lancers, 2-0. Erin Stevenson and Christina Corbi each scored off assists from Nikki Saad to help break a four-game losing streak for the Retrievers on Sept. 10, 2017.
