BALTIMORE – First-year head coach Vanessa Mann has announced the UMBC women's soccer 2018 schedule, celebrating 30 years of Retriever women's soccer.
After an exhibition against Rider on August 7, the Retrievers open the season on Friday, August 17 at Retriever Soccer Park as they welcome Robert Morris for a 5 p.m. contest. The team heads on the road for two straight road contests, heading to Philadelphia to face La Salle for the first time since 2009 on August 19. UMBC will then visit the reigning NEC Champions, St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flash on August 23.
UMBC returns to Retriever Soccer Park on Sunday, August 26 as they close out the month with a contest against American at 1 p.m.
September opens with the Retrievers competing in the Battle for Baltimore, starting with a September 2 contest at Loyola (Md.). UMBC welcomes Mount St. Mary's on Friday, September 7 at 7 p.m., before concluding the tournament at Towson on September 9.
"The Battle for Baltimore has been something myself, [Loyola head coach] Naomi [Meiburger], [Towson head coach] Katherine [Vettori], and [The Mount head coach] Tori [Krause] have been discussing especially with three out of the four of us being new head coaches," Mann said. "What we hope to provide is a platform for each of our programs to compete with each other yearly and offer marketing opportunities, clinics for the greater Baltimore youth soccer community, selecting an all-tournament team and really create a buzz that our programs look forward to being part of."
UMBC remains on the road as they travel to Philadelphia to face Penn for the first time since 2011 on September 14. The Retrievers return to Baltimore to close out the non-conference schedule with a 1 p.m. contest against first-time opponent NJIT on Sunday, September 16.
The Retrievers kicks off their 15th season in the America East as they visit the defending regular season New Hampshire Wildcats on September 23. The team returns to Retriever Soccer Park for a Thursday night contest against Binghamton on September 27 at 6 p.m.
UMBC will play two road games against Hartford (Sept. 7) and Vermont (Oct. 7) before playing two straight at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers will welcome defending America East Champions Stony Brook to Baltimore on Thursday, October 11 at 7 p.m., before hosting UMass Lowell on Sunday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
UMBC hits the road for the final time as they face Albany (Oct. 18) before closing out the season on Sunday, October 21 at home against Maine at noon.
"Our non-conference schedule will really challenge our ladies in a great way to then set us up to be successful through our conference schedule. Each of our conference opponents will provide a different yet exciting opportunity to evolve our product each week," Mann said. "The format of our schedule will assist in minimizing missed class time and offer us a platform to manage the load that is put on our student-athletes body. "
The America East Championships will be held on October 25 and 28, with the championship game being played on either November 3 or 4.
