LORETTO, Pa. – The UMBC women's soccer team fell on the road to St. Francis (Pa.), 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Stokes Soccerplex. The Red Flash pick up their first win and move to 1-5-0, while the Retrievers fall to 2-4-0.
After a scoreless first period, St. Francis netted the game's only goal in the 62nd minute. After a corner kick, Shannon McGinnis sent a header toward the net and teammate Sara Suler was able to head it in between the post for the score.
UMBC had a few chances to score, including a shot by freshman Rayven Conner in the first half and two shots by redshirt-senior Alexa Quaranta and freshman Nikki Saad in the second period that were all saved by Julia Hernan.
Overall on the day, the Red Flash outshot the Retrievers, 18-13, 6-4 on goal. Sophomore Leah Roth finished the day with four saves to go with a team save, while Hernan had four saves.
Quaranta led the team with three shots, giving her sole possession of tenth place in career shots at UMBC with 110. Conner and Saad each finished the day with two.
UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will take a week off before travelling to Longwood on Sunday, Sept. 11. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
