BALTIMORE – UMBC Head Women's Soccer Coach Leslie Wray has announced the Retrievers' schedule for the 2016 season, which features an early four-game road swing and four America East Conference home games in the month of October.
Wray begins her fifth season at the helm of the Retrievers' program on Friday, Aug. 19, as the American Eagles visit Retriever Soccer Park for a 7:00 p.m. encounter. Two days later, the Retrievers make the short trip to Loyola for an afternoon contest (1:00 p.m.) and then return home to take on 2015 Big South champion Liberty on Thurs., Aug. 25 at 5:30 p.m.
Then, UMBC embarks on a four-game roadie, starting with a re-match versus UNC Wilmington (2:00 p.m) on August 28 and concluding with a trip to Longwood (3:00 p.m.) two weeks later on Sept. 11.
The Retrievers wrap up non-conference action with home matches versus Delaware State (Sun., Sept. 18, 1:00 p.m.) and Robert Morris (Thurs., Sept. 22, 7:00 p.m.) before kicking off league play at UNH on Sun., Sept. 25.
"Overall, our non-conference schedule is difficult," Wray said. "Having two familiar opponents in American and Loyola on our opening weekend is nice. We have GW back on the schedule and have added St. Francis (Pa.) and Longwood. We start off strong right off the bat."
After concluding the month of September at 2015 regular season champion Hartford (Sept. 29), the Retrievers host four of the next five conference contests. They welcome Maine (Sun., Oct. 2, 1:00 p.m.) and UMass Lowell (Thurs., Oct. 6, 7:00 p.m.) before traveling to Vermont the following Thursday. After returning from Burlington, UMBC has a quick turnaround by hosting Stony Brook on Sun., Oct. 16 and then face Binghamton in the regular season home finale on Thurs., Oct. 20.
The Retrievers conclude the regular season on Sun., Oct. 23 when they travel to 2015 league champion Albany for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
"Once conference play starts, it is anybody's game. In America East, we can have a six-seed win the tournament and can have teams go from the bottom to the top, like we did in 2013," Wray said. "I hope we can make a push, not just to make the conference tournament for our fourth year in a row, but to try and be one of the top seeds," Wray said.
The 2016 America East Championship first round is set for Thursday, Oct. 27. The semifinals are set for Sunday, Oct. 30, followed by the finals on Sat., Nov. 7, with all games scheduled to be held at the higher seed.
