UMBC Women’s Soccer Entertains Albany in America East Opener

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's soccer opener up its 13th season of America East action on Sunday, Sept. 27 when the Retrievers entertain Albany in a 1 p.m. matchup at Retriever Soccer Park. All the live action will be available, free of charge, on, courtesy of the America East digital network.

Scouting the Retrievers (2-7-1)

-UMBC starts with a clean slate after posting a 2-7-1 record in non-conference action. The Retrievers are coming off a 2-0 loss to George Washington on Thursday. UMBC senior goalkeeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) finished with five saves in the losing effort.

-The Retrievers were picked to finish third in the America East preseason poll after tying for second in the league a season ago with a 4-2-2 record in conference play. UMBC returned 15 letterwinners and four starters from last year's roster.

-In non-conference action, the Retrievers averaged 0.90 goals per game on 9.6 shots per contest. Red-shirt junior forward Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) recorded a team-best 22 shots and ranks second on the team in points, with one goal and a team-best three assists. Senior forward Amanda Dailey (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) has helped Quaranta keep the pressure on up front with 19 shots on the season, but the Freehold, N.J., native is still looking for her first goal of 2015.   

- Nance picked up her first clean sheet of the season against Delaware State on Friday, Sept. 18 to move into a tie for fifth all-time at UMBC in shutouts (10). Nance has started in eight of her nine appearances on the year and has registered 38 stops on the season.   

Scouting the Great Danes (5-5-0)

-Albany has won two of its last three games entering into conference action. The Great Danes concluded their three-game non-conference road trip with a 1-0 victory against Rhode Island on Thursday. Sophomore forward Vivian Vega registered her team-best fifth goal of the season versus the Rams.

-Albany was picked to finish fourth in the America East preseason poll after placing fourth in 2014 with a 3-2-3 record in league action.

-Vega and red-shirt sophomore Kiana Rugar have each tallied 11 points on the season. Two of Vega's five goals have been game-winners, while Rugar has chipped in four goals and is tied for a team-high with three assists.

-Senior goalkeeper Alana Brennan has played all 922:36 of action in net for the Great Danes. Brennan is surrendering 1.27 goals per game and has made 48 saves on the season.  

Inside the Series

-UMBC has won two straight in the series to take a 7-5 advantage all-time.
-The Retrievers defeated the Great Danes, 1-0, in Albany on Oct. 23 last season. UMBC's Jessy Brown netted the only goal of the contest in the 72nd minute.
