BALTIMORE – UMBC women's soccer's eliminated a one-goal first-half deficit as sophomore midfielder Gabby Boehmer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) tallied her second goal of the season to help send the Retrievers' home opener into overtime. UMBC finished the day with 17 shots, but were unable to put away the go-ahead score, picking up a 1-1 double-overtime draw in non-conference action against Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers move to 0-1-1 on the season, while Bucknell improves to 1-0-1.
UMBC red-shirt junior Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) looked to create on the offensive end 13 minutes into the contest by dishing off a pass inside the box to sophomore forward Rachel Lyon (Orrtanna, Pa./Gettysburg Area). Lyon was able get past her defender, but was left with a tough angle on her shot, allowing Bucknell goalkeeper Jessica Ratner to pick up the easy save.
The Retrievers threatened again in the 31st minute as senior forward Sunita Mengers (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) found Quaranta inside the box for a shot, but Ratner dove for her second save of the half to keep the game scoreless.
Despite UMBC's threats, it was Bucknell that was able to get on the board first as a cross from freshman forward Talia Szatkowski made it through into the box for Sarah Bresette. The junior forward finished the turnaround shot inside the far post to give the Bison a 1-0 advantage with 11:01 to go before the break.
The Retrievers outshot Bucknell, 6-4, in the opening half, but UMBC looked far more aggressive in the second half, tallying nine shots in the period and adding three corner kicks.
The Retrievers were able to even the score at one apiece following its first corner kick of the contest. Freshman midfielder Karen Aye (Columbia, Md./St. John's College) sent the corner in and senior back Nikki Boretti (Garmisch, Germany/Archbishop Spalding) headed it into the six-yard box. In the midst of the scramble in front of the net, senior Amanda Dailey (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) was able to get a shot off her heel and Boehmer was there to clean up on the line to tie the contest at one apiece in the 58th minute.
UMBC had the first chance in overtime, as senior back Amira Walcott (Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) split two defenders and blasted a shot toward the goal, but Ratner was there to pick up her sixth save of the afternoon.
Bucknell responded with a chance of its own following a corner kick from junior midfielder Cora Climo, but Jackie Ham's shot was saved on the line by a kick from Boehmer to keep the contest knotted at one with nearly six minutes left in the first overtime.
Neither team was able to generate a lot of offense in the second overtime, leading to the 1-1 draw. UMBC goalkeeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) made on save on the afternoon, while Ratner registered six stops on the day.
