UMBC Women’s Soccer Announces Trio of Captains

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's soccer team has announced that senior back Nikki Boretti (Garmisch, Germany/Archbishop Spalding), senior goalkeeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) and red-shirt junior forward Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) will serve as the Retrievers' three team captains for the upcoming 2015 season.

"I am happy with the leadership of our three captains," said UMBC head coach Leslie Wray. "Each of them brings a different aspect of leadership to the team. Their work rate, intensity and discipline embody the characteristics that we need with our leadership and make up the core values of our team. We feel comfortable with them sharing those qualities and inspiring the team."

Boretti has not missed a start in the last two seasons with the Retrievers and has earned the starting nod in 55 of her 57 appearances since stepping on campus. Last season, the back became the first UMBC women's soccer player to be named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Women's Soccer First Team. On the field, she posted career-bests in points (seven) and goals (three), as well as earning a spot on the America East All-Tournament Team for the second straight season. Boretti was also named the team's Unsung Hero at the Grittys (UMBC Athletics' Varsity Awards Ceremony).

Nance took over the role as starting goalkeeper last season, starting all 19 contests in net. As a junior, she was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team after leading the league and posting a program single-season record in shutouts (nine). Nance also led the conference in goals against average (0.61) and save percentage (.882). The goalkeeper helped UMBC to post its lowest number of goals allowed (12) in program history last season.

Quaranta makes her return to the pitch after suffering a season-ending injury two games into the 2014 campaign. In 2013, Quaranta tallied eight of her 11 career goals en route to earning America East All-Conference First Team honors and being recognized as the America East Women's Soccer Fans' Choice Player of the Year.

The Retrievers open the regular season at Navy on Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and host Bucknell on Sunday, Aug. 23 in their home-opener at 1 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
