BALTIMORE – UMBC Women's Soccer's Head Coach Leslie Wray has announced the addition of Rutgers' transfer Shannon Phillips (Greenbelt, Md./Sidwell Friends) to the 2015 roster. Phillips has three years left of eligibility.
"We are very happy to have Shannon join our team this fall," said Wray. "It is always nice to get a quality newcomer who has been playing at a high level. She is expected to make an impact immediately in the center back position."
After red-shirting her initial campaign with the Scarlet Knights due to injury, Phillips returned in 2014 to appear in two matches. Prior to Rutgers, the 5-9 back was a four-year starter at Sidwell Friends High School. She was part a defense that held opponents scoreless for 810 consecutive minutes en route to finishing first place in the Mid-Atlantic Conference in 2012.
Phillips, who was named to the All-Elite Clubs National League National Team in 2012, will once again play under the tutelage of UMBC assistant coach Steve Campbell, after competing for Campbell's Freestate Elite ECNL U18 club team.
Phillips is the joined by six other UMBC signees that will be added to the Retrievers' roster in 2015. In March, Wray signed Karen Aye (Columbia, Md./St. John's College), Katherine Berkowitz (Crofton, Md./South River), Jenna Denis (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), Mikayla Krinetz (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Skyler Mackey (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) and Leigh Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland).
The newcomers will join five starters and 18 letterwinners from last year's team that posted the fewest losses in program history and finished second in the America East. Over the last two seasons, the Retrievers have posted a 25-10-5 overall record.
