Women's Soccer Edges Maine 1-0 for First Conference Win


BALTIMORE- UMBC women's soccer's senior midfielder Paige Preston (Freehold, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season which proved to be the game-winner as UMBC defeated Maine 1-0 Sunday afternoon in America East action at Retriever Soccer Park. Junior goalkeeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md.) earned her program-record seventh shutout of the season in the victory.

UMBC improves to 9-3-2 on the year and 1-1-2 in league play, while Maine falls to 3-7-4 overall and 1-1-3 in AEC games.

In the 42nd minute, Melissa Hummel (Downingtown, Pa.) sent a corner kick into the box and after a shot by freshman Gabby Boehmer (Lebanon, Pa.) was deflected at the line, Preston was there to tap it in for the only goal of the match.

The Black Bears had their share of opportunities as well. With 14 minutes remaining in the match, a free kick near the corner was sent off the head of Kendra Ridley, but Hummel was there to clear the ball for a team save.

UMBC continues conference play on Thursday, October 16 versus UMass Lowell at 7p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
