BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's soccer team will host American on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m., in the first of two games at the Retriever Soccer Park. The men's soccer team follows with their season-opener against Radford at 7 p.m. All the action can be seen on live video at www.umbcretrievers.tv, or follow live stats at www.umbcretrievers.com.
The UMBC women's soccer team (0-1-1) opened up its 2012 campaign last weekend with a scoreless draw in its first-ever meeting with Lafayette last Friday night. The Retrievers continued to battle throughout the weekend, cutting a 2-0 deficit in half on a successful penalty kick from senior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) on Sunday against Navy. UMBC fell short on its comeback, dropping its first contest of the season, 2-1 to the Mids, despite a 10-save effort from junior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas). Kadet ended the opening weekend with 16 saves.
McKee scored the first UMBC goal for the second-straight season. She ended the 2011 campaign with a team-best seven goals and currently leads all active Retrievers with 10 career goals.
American (0-2-1) has dropped two of its first three contests, falling in the season-opener, 2-0, to Villanova. The Eagles responded with a 2-2 tie versus Saint Joseph's on Sunday. In its third-consecutive road contest, American jumped on the board first, as Jasmine Mohandesi scored her second goal in as many games. However, AU was unable to hang on against George Mason, surrendering the equalizer in the 70th minute and allowing the game-winner five minutes into overtime.
Goalkeeper Charlene Belanger is in her first season of action between the pipes. She has totaled 16 saves in three contests, including a career-best seven stops versus George Mason.
