BALTIMORE – With one season at the helm of the black and gold under her belt, UMBC women's soccer head coach Leslie Wray is set for an 18-game 2013 slate, which features 10 games at the Retriever Soccer Park and 11 games in the state of Maryland.
"I am very pleased with our schedule this fall," Wray said. "We have a competitive schedule in and our of conference and I am thrilled to have so many games close to home."
The Dawgs open the 2013 campaign on their home turf on Aug. 23 when it takes on its first of three Northeast Conference opponents in Mount St. Mary's. UMBC hits the road for back-to-back contests against a pair of teams that made it to postseason play a year ago, traveling to the nation's capital to take on American (Aug. 25), and following with an Aug. 30 meeting in Philadelphia versus St. Joseph's.
The Retrievers return home where it will play five of their seven contests in the month of September, beginning with a UMBC soccer doubleheader on Sept. 1, in which the men's team will welcome UNLV to the Retriever Soccer Park, followed by the women's team hosting Drexel, its first of three contests in a 10-day span. On Sept. 6, the black and gold take on Robert Morris for the first time since leaving the Northeast Conference following the 2002 season.
UMBC travels to cross-town rival Loyola (Md.), one of two 2012 NCAA participants on the Retrievers' schedule, in a battle of the dogs on Sept. 10, before returning to the Retriever Soccer Park for home games versus Howard (Sept. 13) and Bucknell (Sept. 15) and closing out the three-game homestand with Camper Day against Wagner (Sept. 22). The Dawgs close out their non-conference schedule in Easton, Pa. against Lafayette.
"It is an exciting time for this program," said Wray. "The players and staff are looking forward to the challenge ahead of us and I am confident that our non-conference schedule, with the addition of Loyola and St. Joseph's, will prepare our young team to be successful in league play."
The Retrievers open their America East slate on Sept. 29 in Orono, Maine to take on the Black Bears. The black and gold hit Vestal, N.Y. for a matchup with Binghamton on Oct. 3, before returning to Baltimore for a two-game home stretch against Albany (Oct. 6), in which the black and gold will welcome their alumni back to the Retriever Soccer Park for Alumni Day, and Vermont (Oct. 10).
UMBC heads back north to take on Stony Brook (Oct. 17), the conference's defending champion, and conference newcomer UMass Lowell (Oct. 20). The Retrievers welcome the 2012 regular-season league champion Hartford Hawks to the Retriever Soccer Park on Oct. 24 and close out the 2013 campaign with a matchup on Senior Day against New Hampshire and first-year head coach Sam Lopes (Oct. 27).
