Women's Soccer Scores Draw with Sacred Heart, 1-1, After Late Goal

The UMBC women's soccer team (1-5-2) came from behind and scored 10 minutes from the end of regulation to tie Sacred Heart (0-6-1), 1-1, on Friday afternoon at Campus Field.

In the 17th minute, Pioneer senior Allison Rojas fired in Sacred Heart's only corner of the game to senior Lisa Nowakowski, who headed the ball in past junior goalkeeper Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) for her first goal of the season.

The Retrievers poured on the pressure, out-shooting the Pioneers 16-12. Sacred Heart looked to hold out for their first victory of the season, but in the 80th minute, freshman forward Ashley Singer (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) scored her third goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder Amanda Benedict (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).

UMBC had a few chances after Pioneer senior Alyssa Long was sent-off in the 82nd minute, leaving Sacred Heart down a player for almost 30 minutes including both overtimes, but the Retrievers could not capitalize.

Junior goalkeeper Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) made three saves coming off the bench, while Pioneer freshman Meghan Reichelt made six saves. UMBC held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return at action Sunday, when they head to West Point, N.Y. to face Army at 1 p.m.
