Women’s Soccer: Retrievers Look for First Win at Drexel, Bucknell This Week

The UMBC women's soccer team (0-2-0) heads on the road this week against Drexel (0-1-0) on Thursday, Sept. 6th at 7 p.m. and Bucknell (1-1-0) on Sunday, Sept. 9th at 2 p.m.

Looking back: The Retrievers lost twice in their opening weekend at UMBC Soccer Stadium. They lost to Towson, 5-1, in the season opener on Aug. 31st, and to Elon, 2-1 in overtime, on Sept. 2. Freshman forwards Sandra Vacarino and Ashley Singer both scored their first career goals for the Retrievers.

On the Dragons: Drexel lost their season opener at St. Joseph's, 1-0, on Aug. 31. Dragon goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond recorded two saves. The Dragons went 5-12-1 (2-9-0 in CAA) last season with senior Aleka Yiantsos leading the team with four goals and four assists. Drexel was picked to finish last in the Colonial conference coaches preseason poll.

UMBC vs. Drexel All-Time: This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

On the Bison: Bucknell is 1-1-0 on the season after a 3-1 loss to Yale on Aug. 31 and a 1-0 victory against Sacred Heart. Junior Jennifer Dervarics scored in the 63rd minute to give the Bison the win. Sophomore Kathryn Sutton made five saves for her first career shutout. Bucknell finished last season with a 12-5-1 (6-1-0 in Patriot League) record and were picked to finish second in the Patriot League preseason coaches poll.

Last time vs. the Bison: The two schools have not faced each other since Sept. 7, 1993 when the Retrievers defeated Bucknell 4-3 in Baltimore.

UMBC vs. Bucknell All-Time: The Retrievers lead the series 2-1 with the Bison's lone victory coming on Sept. 9, 1992 in Lewisburg, Pa.

Moving Up the Ranks: With her assist against Towson, senior forward Jessica Young moved within one assist of tying senior midfielder Amy Morrison (8a) for 10th all-time with seven career assists. Young is tied with Kasy Kruger (1992-95) for fifth place all-time at UMBC with 23 career goals scored. She also ranks seventh all-time with 53 career points.
