Jacksonville, Fla.-The UMBC women's soccer team (3-3-1) lost to Stetson University by a score of 3-2 in the first game of the Kick Out Cancer Tournament at Jacksonville University on Friday.
The Retrievers took an early lead, as junior forward Jessica Young scored from 20 yards out in the 16th minute. Young's goal would be the only goal from either team in the first half.
The Hatters (2-5-0) came out into the second half with a renewed sense of offense and proceeded to score three goals between the 51st and 60th minutes.
Stetson forward Jessica Spencer scored at 50:08 off a deflection from forward Sarah Stock to even the score at 1-1.
Not long afterwards, midfielder Kelly Kuenning scored on a one-on-one situation with Retriever netminder Robin Babaris at 53:52 to give Stetson a 2-1 lead.
Kuenning would convert off a ball from Spencer and midfielder Julianne Turnbull at 59:01 to put Stetson ahead of the Retrievers 3-1. The goal was also the game-winner.
Retriever back Kali Schwartz scored late in the second half at 82:54 off a penalty to make the final score 3-2, Stetson.
Babaris recorded nine saves in 90:00 and allowed three goals.
Stetson goalkeeper April Eilering played for 82:48 and recorded one save and allowed one goal before being ejected with a red card. Sarah Turnbull took her place in goal and allowed one goal in 7:12.
The Hatters outshot the Retrievers 23-7 and held a 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Retrievers conclude the Kick Out Cancer Tournament , Sunday Sept. 17, as they face host Jacksonville at 2 p.m.
