UMBC WOMEN’S SOCCER SHUTS OUT ST. PETER’S, 4-0, AT UMBC INVITATIONAL

-Four different Retrievers scored and UMBC (2-3-0) shut down St. Peter's offense, as the women's soccer team shut out the Peahens (0-5-0), 4-0, Friday evening on day one of the UMBC Invitational at UMBC Stadium.

Despite a heavy offensive outpouring by the Retrievers, the game remained scoreless for most of the first half, until freshman Kali Schwartz (Congers, N.Y./Clarkstown South) converted a free kick from junior Mary Hearin (North Potomac, Md./Watkins Mill) at the 36:57 mark. The goal was Schwartz's first of her career, and it was Hearin's first assist of the year, as well.

Less than three minutes later, sophomore Amy Morrison (Crofton, Md./South River) scored the first goal of her career on a breakaway at the 39:33 mark to give the Retrievers a 2-0 lead, which would stand until halftime. Morrison now has four points on the season, surpassing her 2004 total of three.

Both teams again came out of the gate scoreless in the second half, until sophomore Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) scored her team-leading third goal of the season at the 78:07 mark. The Retrievers struck again less than three minutes later, as Schwartz put the ball in the net her second goal of the game, giving UMBC a 4-0 lead, and ultimately the victory.

The Retrievers out-shot the Peahens 22-2, including 13-1 in the first half, and held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks. UMBC freshman goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) registered two saves while recording the second shutout of her career. St. Peter's goalie Angelina Albruzzese tallied 10 saves while allowing all four Retriever goals.

Earlier in the evening, High Point (3-2-0) defeated Mount St. Mary's (2-1-1), 5-1, in the first game of the UMBC Invitational. Amy Anzovino led the Panthers offense with two goals, while Reine DeLaat, Jen Evans and Meredyth Heppe also scored for High Point. Kelli Devine scored the Mount's lone goal of the game.

The UMBC Invitational continues Sunday, Sept. 11, at UMBC Stadium. High Point faces off with St. Peter's at 10 a.m., while the Retrievers take on former Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's at 5 p.m.
