WOMEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS MOUNT ST. MARY’S, 3-0, TO MOVE BACK TO .500

-The UMBC women's soccer team (3-3-0) moved back to .500 on the season with a 3-0 shutout of Mount St. Mary's (2-2-1) Sunday evening on the second day of the UMBC Invitational at UMBC Stadium. The Retrievers finished 2-0 on the weekend, while the Mount went 0-2.

Sophomore forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) got UMBC on the board right out of the gates, scoring her fourth goal of the season just 1:05 in, on a shot into the upper far corner. Junior forward Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) notched her first goal of the year at the 28:30 mark, as the ball went off Mount goalie Alyssa Flora's hands to give the Retrievers a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The teams remained scoreless for more than 30 minutes to start the second period. The Retrievers were awarded a corner kick, which sophomore midfielder Amy Morrison (Crofton, Md./South River) sent to junior Mary Hearin (North Potomac, Md./Watkins Mill), who dished it to junior forward Amanda DiCarlo (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada/St. Paul's). DiCarlo netted the ball for her third goal of the season, giving UMBC a 3-0 lead, and ultimately the victory.

Retriever freshman goalies Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) and Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina) split time between the pipes. Bacinski recorded two saves in the first half, while Bukowski tallied four in the second period in the first game action of her career. The Retrievers recorded their second shutout in as many games. Flora had four saves for the Mount in 90 minutes of play.

UMBC out-shout Mount St. Mary's, 22-10, and had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. The Retrievers are undefeated in 11 tries against their former Northeast Conference foe.

In the first game of the day, High Point (4-2-0) defeated St. Peter's (0-6-0), 4-0. Traci Andersen scored twice for the Panthers, as they finished 2-0 on the weekend after Friday's win over Mount St. Mary's. St. Peter's finished 0-2 on the weekend after Friday's loss 4-0 to UMBC.

The Retrievers return to action Friday, Sept. 16, at regional rival Loyola. Game time is 3 p.m.
