, Md. – UMBC finished its season at 8-10 and 3-6 in the America East after falling to league foe Boston University (13-5-2, 5-3-1) by a 2-1 count on Senior Day afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Terriers clinched a spot in the six-team field of the America East Tournament.
Prior to the start of the match, UMBC honored its two seniors, Roula Adams (Baltimore, Md./Mercy), and Kelly Lizon (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township). Adams started the game, while Lizon played in goal for the Retrievers in the second half.
Boston University struck early in the first period when they were able to capitalize on a corner kick at 2:32. Junior Meghann Cook (Melrose, Mass.) served the ball right in front of the goal, and sophomore Erica Lee (Oakton, Va.) was able to shoot it into the left corner. However, just over four minutes later, UMBC would tie the game at one apiece when freshman Casey Smith (Apollo Beach, Fla./East Bay) kicked the ball back to sophomore Betsy Day (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester), who was wide open at the 20 yard line. Day took the shot, which floated over the hands of BU keeper Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, N.Y.), and into the upper left corner of the net. The score would remain tied at the half.
In the second period, UMBC would not be able to get any offensive attack going, as the Terriers outshot the Retrievers, 20-2. Sophomore Lauren Erwin (Orange, Conn.) finally broke the 1-1 deadlock at 65:38 after controlling a rebounded shot, and shooting it past Lizon.
For the game, BU outshot the Retrievers, 32-8, and had more corners, 11-0. Dreyer made three saves for the Terriers, while junior Robin Babaris (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat), who started in goal for UMBC, stopped four in 45 minutes of play. Lizon, who played in her final game for the Retrievers, made an amazing 11 saves in 45 minutes.
