UMBC WOMEN’S SOCCER SNAPS FOUR-GAME LOSING STREAK WITH 1-0 WIN OVER PITTSBURGH

Golibart's (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) made penalty kick with 21:30 remaining in the game was enough to give UMBC (5-7-0) a 1-0 victory over non-conference foe Pittsburgh (4-6-1) this afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium. The win snapped the Retrievers' four-game losing streak, and was the team's first win since a 5-0 shutout of Delaware State on September 19.

UMBC outshot the Panthers, 6-3, in the first half, although Pittsburgh had opportunities to score. The visitors' best chance came during a breakaway by freshman Janean Gardner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), but her close-range shot was stopped by Retriever keeper Robin Babaris (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat).

In the second half, UMBC freshman J.J. Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) broke away from Pittsburgh defenders, but was tripped just inside the box by Panther goalie Jamie Pelusi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton). Pelusi was given a yellow card, and Golibart was able to convert on the penalty kick. The Pittsburgh offense continued their attack, outshooting the Retrievers, 6-3, in the second stanza, but UMBC would hold on for the 1-0 win.

For the game, both teams had nine shots, while Pittsburgh had more corner kicks, 7-5. Babaris made three saves, while Pelusi stopped six for the visitors.

UMBC returns to action on Friday, October 15, when they host America East rival Stony Brook at 4 p.m. at the UMBC Soccer Stadium.
