Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC Women's Soccer team will begin America East conference play this week when they travel to Maine for a 3 p.m. game on Friday, October 1, and to New Hampshire for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, October 3.
The Retrievers fell to the .500 (4-4) mark once again after dropping a 2-0 decision to Marshall last Friday. Currently, the team is led by freshmen J.J. Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and Kersha Walker (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas Aquinas). For the season, Young has three goals and two assists, while Walker has two goals. Junior Kelly Fiorani (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) leads the team in assists with three.
Maine (6-2-1) defeated Rider by a score of 2-0 last Friday, September 24, and is currently ranked eight in the Northeast Region, according to Soccer Buzz Magazine. The Black Bears are paced by Marie-Andree Canuel, who has nine goals and a helper, and Heather Hathorn, who has six goals and two assists. Gametime will be 3 p.m. at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine.
New Hampshire (4-4-2) will open conference against Binghamton on Friday, before hosting UMBC at Lewis Fields on Sunday at 1 p.m. Freshman Adriana Gonzalez-Medina was recently named America East Rookie of the Week after she scored both game-winners in the 4-2 victory over Providence College and 1-0 shutout of Rhode Island. Currently, the Wildcats are led in scoring by Chiara Best, who has three goals and an assist, and Jackie Wishoski, who has three goals.
