WOMEN’S SOCCER CLINCHES #6 SPOT FOR AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT WITH 1-0 UPSET OF NORTHEASTERN

Baltimore, MD - Senior forward Lori Quintavalle's (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) goal at 81:15 propelled UMBC (7-7-1, 4-4-1 America East) to a 1-0 shutout of Northeastern (11-7-0, 5-4-0) this Senior Day afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Retrievers secured the sixth and final berth in this year's conference tournament.

Both teams had numerous opportunities to score in the first half as the teams combined for a total of 10 shots. UMBC freshman Amanda DiCarlo (Ontario, Canada /St. Paul's) had the best chance when she found Huskies keeper Cynthia Slowik (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) out of the net, but her shot hit the inner side of the post and bounced out into the hands of Slowik.

In the second half, the Huskies were awarded six corner kick opportunities, but were not able to convert. With just under nine minutes remaining in the game, Quintavalle was able to break away from Northeastern defenders, just before striking the ball at the five-yard mark, past Slowik, and into the lower right corner of the Huskies' net. Earlier in the day, Quintavalle was honored along with fellow classmates Jessa Karko (Perry Hall, Md. /Institute of Notre Dame), Carolynn Patton (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), and Kristin English (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) for Senior Day before playing in their final home game of the regular season.

For the game, Northeastern outshot UMBC, 9-7. Slowik made two saves, while the Retrievers' Robin Babaris (Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat) stopped five to record her fourth solo shutout of the season.
