Baltimore, MD-On Friday, in a game short on quality scoring chances, UMBC took advantage of their first opportunity just 7:25 into overtime as they scraped out a 1-0 win over visiting East Carolina. On Sunday, UMBC (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead, but Villanova tallied five times in the second half for a 5-2 win in Philadelphia. Against ECU, Junior forward Nicole Grinspoon notched the game-winning goal with a header from five yards out that caromed into the upper right hand corner of the net. Junior teammate Laura Motley fed Grinspoon with a cross that the native of Baltimore redirected into the net for the game's lone goal. Offensively, neither team was able to produce much as East Carolina managed only eight shots while UMBC could muster just seven. Retriever junior goalkeeper Becky Hicock stopped two shots while ECU's Lauren Wolff made one save. Jessa Karko scored 3:01 into the game off a direct kick attempt by Viviana Saraceno to give UMBC a quick 1-0 lead over Villanova. Then, Laura Motley redirected a Missy Moore shot at 17:05 and the Retrievers held on for a 2-0 halftime advantage. But the Wildcats peppered Becky Hicock with 31 shots and scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the second half and got the game winner at the 61:24 mark. Hicock finished the game with 10 saves. 1 2 OT F ECU 0 0 0 - 0 UMBC 0 0 1 - 1 Goals- ECU- none. UMBC- Nicole Grinspoon (97:25) Assists-ECU - none.
