Baltimore, MD-The UMBC women's soccer team secured a spot in the Northeast Conference post-season tournament today with a 2-1 victory over Central Connecticut State at the UMBC Soccer Stadium. The Retrievers finish the season with an 8-2 record in the conference after reeling off a season-ending 11 game unbeaten streak (9-0-2). UMBC (10-5-2, 8-2 NEC) got on the board late in the first half as freshman midfielder Kim Sawyer connected on her second goal of the season at the 39:15 mark. Fellow freshman Lauren Cunningham controlled the ball and threaded a pass through the goal box right onto Sawyer's foot as she made her run and the Virginia Beach, VA native beat CCSU goalkeeper Sabrina Mariani to the lower righthand side of the net. In the last home game for seniors, it was the freshman who shined on this day as Missy Moore, the Retrievers leading scorer, made her presence known in the second half with her 14th goal of the season at 64:07. Moore corralled a rebound off a missed shot that Mariani could not handle and she booted it past her for the game-winner. She now has a total of 32 points (14g, 4a) on the season. Central Connecticut would convert a penalty kick late in the game, but it would be to no avail as UMBC hung on for the 2-1 win. Junior goalie Becky Hicock made four saves in the win while Mariani stopped five shots for CCSU. Overall, the Retrievers outshot the Blue Devils, 13-6. The NEC Tournament begins next Friday at St. Francis (PA) where the Retrievers will be no worse than a #3 seed. 1 2 F Central Conn. St. 0 1 1 UMBC 1 1 2 Scoring: CCSU- Emma Wright, 73:31.
