Women's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime Battle to Bucknell, 11-10

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Through a rainy battle and overtime, the UMBC women's lacrosse team fell to the Bucknell Bison, 11-10, on Thursday afternoon.

 

STRAIGHT FACTS

Bucknell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Lily Kennedy (Marriotsville, Md./Marriots Ridge) found Catherine Sims (Elkridge, Md./Howard) in front of the net for UMBC's first goal.

 

The teams exchanged goals, as Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) helped to cut the lead to 3-2 before the Bison added another goal.

 

Kennedy scored with 16 seconds left to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Retrievers tied it up right before the half as Docal found Grayson Corbett (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) wide open in front of the net to tie the game up at 4-all with six seconds left.

 

Docal kept the Retriever momentum going as she scored her second of the day just 1:20 into the second half to put UMBC up, 5-4.

 

After the Bison tied it up two minutes later, Docal and Julia Hatmaker (Woodbine, Md./Century) scored back-to-back goals, almost a minute apart, to take a 7-5 lead.

 

Kennedy and Corbett, off an assist from Rachel Walchuck (Myersville, Md./Myersville), put the Retrievers up 9-5 before the Bison ended the scoring run at the 16:02 mark.

 

Bucknell scored back-to-back goals off free position shots to close the gap to 9-8 at the 6:02 mark, before tying the game up at 9-all with 1:48 on the clock.

 

Docal broke the tie with her fourth score of the game to push UMBC ahead, 10-9, with 22 seconds on the clock. But, the Bison scored with 00.6 on the clock to send the game to overtime.

 

After nine minutes of scoreless play, the Bison scored on a free position shot at the 2:13 mark in the fourth three-minute segment.

Bucknell moves to 3-7 on the season, while UMBC falls to 2-8.

 

BY THE NUMBERS

5 - Docal led the Retrievers with a career-high five points off four goals and one assist. Cassie Evans (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) picked up a team-high five ground balls.

 

4 - Kennedy scored a career-high four points off four goals.

 

3 - Zoë Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and Brittany Levine (Middletown, Md./Middletown) led the Retrievers with three caused turnovers each.

The Retrievers will take the week off before returning to UMBC Stadium on Wednesday, March 27 to host UC Davis in the non-conference finale at 5 p.m.
