The UMBC women's lacrosse team will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. on Thursday, March 21 to take on the Bucknell Bison in a 4:30 p.m. opening draw. The game is was previously scheduled for March 6.
The UMBC women's lacrosse team fell in a crosstown battle to #18 Johns Hopkins, 17-7, on Tuesday night.
The opening half remained scoreless for almost 12 minutes before Hopkins scored back-to-back goals in less than a minute of each other.
After the Blue Jays added another goal to take a 3-0 lead, Lauren McDonald halted the scoring run with her first goal of the game with 15:15 left to play in the first half.
After Hopkins added another goal, Olivia Docal cut it to a two-goal game off a free position shot.
The Blue Jays took an 8-2 lead into halftime, but Grayson Corbett scored just 33 seconds into the second half to cut into the lead.
Johns Hopkins added four more scores to the board to take a 14-4 lead, but the Retrievers used goals from Corbett, Docal, and McDonald to fight back and chip away for a 14-7 Hopkins lead.
The Blue Jays scored three goals over the final ten minutes for the 17-7 final.
McDonald (18g, 2a) and Van Kirk (12g, 8a) lead the team with 20 points, followed by Zoë Pekins (10g) and Corbett (8g, 2a).
Carly Tolino made 15 saves against Hopkins, her second straight game with 15 saves and her fourth consecutive with 10+ stops. The senior ranks seventh in the nation and first in the America East with 100 saves, and 11th in the NCAA with 11.11 saves per game.
With her two goals on the net, McDonald now has 129 career goals and is tied for seventh place in program history. She needs one goal to take over sole possession and four goals to take over sixth place (132, Jackie Abendschoen).
GET TO KNOW: BUCKNELL BISON
Bucknell picked up an 11-8 victory over American on Sunday, March 17. Down 8-5 with 18:36 remaining in the second half, the Bison mounted a six-goal comeback to take down the Eagles.
Eve Calabria leads the Bison with 22 points off 10 goals and 12 assists, followed by Audrey Walsh (10g, 2a) and Morgan Steinhacker (10g).
Callie DeWitt, who leads the team with 19 caused turnovers, ranks tenth in the country and first in the Patriot League with 2.38 miscues per game. As a team, the Bison rank 13th in the country, causing 11.63 turnovers per game.
In goal for the Bison, Jamisen DeWitt has started in all eight contests, making 67 saves and posting a .411 saves percentage. Jamisen ranks 19th in the country in ground balls per game, averaging 3.50 a contest. Her twin sister Callie is 14th, picking up 3.63 a game.
UMBC and Bucknell are meeting for the 13th time, with the Retrievers holding an 8-4 advantage in the series. This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2007 season.
In 2007, UMBC defeated Bucknell, 13-5. The Retrievers opened the game on a six-goal run, including three from Ali Levendusky.
